Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs boneless beef shoulder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp Five Spice Powder
  • 2 tbsp honey (for basting)
  • Optional garnishes: chopped cilantro and sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef shoulder into long strips about 3 inches thick to ensure even cooking and better marinade absorption.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, hoisin sauce, molasses, Five Spice Powder, and seasonings until smooth.
  3. Rub the marinade onto the beef strips thoroughly; for best results, marinate overnight in the refrigerator.
  4. Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C) and arrange marinated beef on a rack over a baking sheet.
  5. Roast uncovered for about 20-25 minutes until caramelized; baste with honey and the remaining marinade halfway through.
  6. Allow the beef to rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing to retain juices.
