  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup black cocoa powder
  • 4 Tbsp whole milk, room temperature
  • 1/4 tsp salt, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth; then carefully stir in hot coffee or water.
  4. Combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for about 32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While cakes cool, prepare the frosting by blending butter with powdered sugar and black cocoa powder until fluffy; add milk and vanilla to achieve desired consistency.
