Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest of an orange, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • Cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, sea salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat together the softened butter and dark brown sugar until creamy—about 2 minutes. Add in the eggs one at a time along with vanilla and orange extracts until well incorporated.
  4. On low speed, beat in half of your dry mixture followed by milk. Add in the remaining dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Pour or spoon the batter into your lined cupcake cups—fill them about two-thirds full. Bake them for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow them to cool completely before frosting.
  6. In another bowl, beat the room temperature butter until creamy before adding in cream cheese until smooth. Gradually mix in vanilla and orange extracts along with sea salt; then slowly add confectioner’s sugar until the desired consistency is reached.
  7. Once cooled, frost each cupcake generously and sprinkle lightly with ground cinnamon.
