Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel-based)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs (from the cupcake centers)
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring (for filling)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or plant-based alternatives
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring
  • Candy fangs or small dots of plant-based gelling agent
  • Red syrup or edible red gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Cream together softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well; incorporate vanilla extract and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt; alternate adding dry ingredients with buttermilk into the wet mixture until combined. Stir in baking soda and vinegar.
  4. Fill muffin cups with batter about two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  5. Prepare the red velvet filling by mixing cake crumbs with sweetened condensed milk and melted butter until smooth.
  6. Hollow out the center of each cupcake and fill with the red velvet mixture.
  7. Make the buttercream frosting by beating softened butter and gradually adding powdered sugar along with milk until smooth; add food coloring as desired.
  8. Frost each cupcake, then decorate with candy fangs and drizzle red syrup for an eerie effect.
